This is the Point of Inaccessibility for Latvia
The Latvian POI is in wet scrubland

The Latvian Point of Inaccessibility lies close to Kaļpi in the Prauliena Parish of Madona Municipality, in Latvia. It is the furthest point from Latvian borders and seas in all directions at 81.6km or 50.7 miles. The coordinates are:

  • Latitude: 56° 47.5983N
  • Longitude: 26° 18.9867E

Getting to the Latvia Pole

I hired a car in Riga and set off around 10:30 am, opting to take a more direct route along the P4 which would be around 160 km. It doesn’t take long to feel that you are out in sparsely populated countryside. And it doesn’t take much longer for the road to turn into a track!

I must admit the road then turns back into regular tarmac, but let’s just say it is an ‘uneven’ surface. That doesn’t matter too much, because there was hardly any traffic, so I could slow down, swerve and speed up as required.

Latvia really is beautiful; the landscape is characterised by lush greenery, vibrant colours, and a sense of natural beauty. But I think I probably got lucky with the weather. Clear skies and sunshine showed it at it’s best. The fact that the fields next to the road were often waterlogged, and that parts of the road were washed away, suggest that rain is more common than blazing hot spring days.

Here’s a typical Latvian countryside dwelling and a stork sighting.

It took around 2 1/2 hours of driving to reach the Point of Inaccessibility, which isn’t too far from a logging track linking the P62 to Kaļpi. Time to ditch the flipflops and put on the boots.

Wet underfoot in Latvian Forest
Good job I took boots

The forestry in which the POI lies had been recently logged, so I could follow tracks most of the way. Then the scrubland wasn’t too dense and easy to break through. It was, however, pretty wet underfoot, so I’m glad I took my boots instead of being lulled into trainers by the sunny weather. What I didn’t have, however, was insect repellent, which would have been a good idea. Within ten minutes, I broke through to the exact pole.

On the way back to Riga, I took the faster E22. It may be faster, but it was a lot busier and I’d definitely recommend taking the P4.
